What started as an app where users can watch movies, TV shows, and music on low network, became a large scale Netflix competitor in Asia.
Viu had thousands of hours of local and international content. We designed the product to focus on promoting latest episodes and encourage binge watching. There was a lot of experimentation done on the spotlight and thumbnail view look to increase engagement. Some of my favorite concepts to work on were social features. We prototyped and done user studies locally on ways to share clips from the episode with friends to start a conversation in the app. As we launched in more countries, we added TV and iPad design to create a wholesome experience.
The product needed to shine, and thumbnails were the way to do it. We've built a strong creative team with artists, retouchers and designers to bring out the storytelling in every movie, TV show poster and episode thumbnail. The old, blurry posters would be remastered by a specialist that would redraw the entire poster to upres it. Titles were created in local languages to match the look and feel of the original design. Users really appreciated the simple fact that they could understand the Korean, or Tamil movie title.
The content team produced quality local entertainment that some of the countries didn't have. Our design team took pride in creating beautiful posters that targeted the local audience. We would work on everything from concept design, to photoshop, retouching, poster design and trailers.

Over the years, I've introduced a range of products, spanning from experimental to commercial ventures. My guiding principle centers on the art of simplifying complexity, making it accessible and comprehensible to a wide spectrum of users.
